이 글은 차배근의 여러 연구업적 가운데 언론사 연구를 중심으로 주요 연구내용과 성과를 살펴보고 한국언론학 연구사에서의 의의에 대해 고찰했다. 차배근의 언론사 연구에서 가장 주목되는 것은 언론사 연구대상과 범위를 크게 확대했다는 점이다. 세계언론사에서 기존 연구성과가 거의 없거나 드문 미국신문사, 중국 전근대언론사, 중국 근대언론사를 연구, 저술했고 한국언론사에서는 전근대언론 〈조보〉, 개화기 일본 유학생의 언론출판활동, 중국 조선민족언론사, 대학신문사 등을 연구대상으로 개척했다. 이런 연구는 차배근이 언론사 연구에 비교사적 관점이 필요하다고 판단했기 때문이었다. 차배근은 또한 언론사 연구에서 언론학적 연구체계를 적용하여 역사연구에 보다 체계적이고 분석적인 연구 틀을 제시했고 내용분석방법을 활용하여 언론사 연구의 분석수준을 높였다. 현재까지의 업적만으로도 차배근은 평생을 학문을 탐구하고 있는 학자로서 한국언론학 연구사에서 그 역사적 의의가 매우 크다.

This paper examined Cha, Bae Keun’s main achievements on journalism and communication history among his various research achievements, and considered about its significance of the research history of journalism and communication studies in Korea. Most noticeable in his research on journalism and communication history is that the scope and subject of study was greatly expanded. He published the development of American journalism which has little or rare research achievements in the world media history in Korea, the history of Chinese pre-modern journalism, and the development of Chinese modern journalism. And he developed new subjects of study, such as Chobo, a Korean pre-modern newspaper in journalism and communication history in Korea, journalism & publishing activity by Korean students in Japan during the Enlightenment Period, the history of the Chinese-Korean journalism, and university newspapers, etc. He realized that a comparative historic point of view was necessary for the study of journalism and communication history. Also he suggested more systematic and analytic research frame by applying media studies system, and raised the levels of analysis by utilizing the content analysis. Even for just his achievement to date a scholar who has devoted his life to research, it could be of great significance in the research history of journalism and communication studies in Korea.
